Stromatolite "Kambamba" Jasper Cubes With Corners Cut To Stand
Stromatolites also known as Kambaba Jasper are layered, sedimentary formations created by ancient microorganisms, primarily cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). These structures represent some of the oldest evidence of life on Earth, with fossilized stromatolites dating back over 3.5 billion years. They form in shallow water environments where bacteria trap and bind sediment particles, gradually building up layers. Over time, these layers create beautiful, intricate patterns, often showing banded or ripple-like textures. The minerals that precipitate during formation add unique colors, including shades of grey, brown, red, and green.
Madagascar is home to ancient stromatolite formations found primarily in sedimentary rock deposits. These fossilized remains, dating back millions to billions of years, offer a captivating glimpse into the island’s ancient geological history, providing evidence of prehistoric microbial life and ancient marine environments. While Madagascar is more famous for its minerals and gemstones, stromatolites from this region are a unique testament to the Earth's early life forms.
